Reunion Tower

Reunion Tower, that unmistakable beacon in the Dallas skyline, faced a common challenge many attractions encounter. Guests, eager for the panoramic views from the observation deck, were bypassing the critical journey leading up to it. These lower levels, rich with the tower’s own narrative, were essentially missed opportunities. Our task was to transform these transitional spaces. We aimed to craft an experience that built anticipation, fostered a deeper connection to the landmark, and gave visitors compelling reasons to pause, explore, and truly engage before their ascent. We wanted to push beyond way-finding and into immersive storytelling.

The Concept

We created two complementary digital experiences designed to work together as part of a cohesive visual story: the Timeless Flight 3D Flythrough and the Historical Timeline & Trivia Experience. Both pieces were developed to bring life to the LED walls within the photo area, offering guests a blend of motion, discovery, and pride in place.

Timeless Flight (3D Flythrough):
This cinematic sequence takes guests on a soaring journey through Dallas. Iconic landmarks like the Eyeball, Pegasus, Deep Ellum Robot, and Reunion Tower itself emerge through sweeping camera moves and layered depth, creating a powerful sense of scale.

Historical Timeline & Trivia Experience:
Across the adjacent LED wall, we designed a storytelling sequence that traces the tower’s rich history: from its construction in 1978 to its present-day role as a Dallas icon. By using layered motion graphics, archival photos, and subtle parallax effects, the timeline brings decades of history to life. Integrated trivia moments invite guests to engage directly, encouraging them to look closer and learn something new about the city and the landmark they’re about to explore.

The two experiences are connected by a geodesic transition sequence, inspired by Reunion Tower’s signature architecture. This visual motif ties the two screens together while also creating a sense of flow between storytelling and spectacle.

The Execution

The gray geodesic pattern that defines Reunion Tower’s design served as a visual anchor. It provided continuity between storytelling moments and complemented the modern interior finishes. Our team worked closely with the tower’s creative and technical partners to ensure the content integrated seamlessly into the environment. This is essential for enhancing the mood and supporting the overall experience leading up to the observation deck.

Every animation was timed to the natural flow of the space, allowing the visual experience to entertain and educate guests as they moved through the area. The result was a system that complemented the overall attraction and strengthened the sense of connection between the digital storytelling, the physical space, and the people who experience it.

Why It Worked

The Timeless Dallas Experience transformed the moments before the observation deck into part of the attraction itself. Guests now encounter a living, cinematic introduction to Dallas and Reunion Tower that builds excitement and curiosity before they ever see the skyline from above. The content not only enhances the physical space but also manages guest flow. This ensures visitors stay engaged while they wait. The elevator ride and arrival at the top deliver a stunning visual climax of the journey. By blending storytelling, rhythm, and design, these digital experiences turned a transitional zone into a destination of its own.

Reunion Tower Elevator Experience

Elevating the Journey

Reunion Tower is one of Dallas’ most recognizable landmarks, rising 470 feet above the city with panoramic views of the surrounding skyline. To make the journey to the observation level as memorable as the destination, Render Impact created an immersive series of videos for the digital display installed in the elevator ceiling.

Four coordinated experiences were developed for daytime and nighttime travel, with distinct upward and downward sequences. Together, they transform the elevator ride into a cinematic journey through the tower and into the Dallas sky.

Vision

The goal was to enhance the natural sensation of vertical movement while giving visitors a memorable introduction and conclusion to their Reunion Tower experience.

Rather than treating the elevator ride as a simple transition, the ceiling display opens the space above the guests, creating the illusion that the elevator is traveling through a dimensional shaft, the tower’s geodesic structure, and the open sky beyond.

Day Ascent

The daytime journey begins with a closed gold door featuring an extruded Reunion Tower logo. The dimensional logo rises from the surface, rotates into position, and locks back against the door before it opens to begin the ascent.

Guests appear to travel upward through an enclosed elevator shaft, passing windows that allow glimpses of daylight into the space. As the elevator approaches the top, a glass door opens to reveal the geodesic structure surrounding Reunion Tower’s observation level.

Maintenance workers suspended from lines add a playful sense of scale and realism. Beyond the structure, clouds drift across the sky, with select formations shaped like recognizable Texas and Dallas icons, including Pegasus, The Traveling Man, and a Texas Longhorn.

A flock of birds passes overhead as the journey continues beyond the enclosure. An airplane crosses the open sky before a welcoming voice introduces guests to the experience awaiting them at the top of the tower. The gold doors then close to complete the sequence.

Day Descent

The return journey reverses the experience, carrying guests back down through the open sky, the cloud layer, and the geodesic enclosure.

The elevator continues descending through the dimensional shaft before arriving at the closed gold doors. A friendly voice thanks guests for visiting, providing a warm conclusion to their time at Reunion Tower.

Night Ascent

The nighttime ascent follows the same architectural journey with an entirely different atmosphere.

Moonlight enters through the windows of the darker elevator shaft before the ceiling opens into a clear, star-filled sky. Constellations inspired by Pegasus, a cowboy hat, and cowboy boots gradually form overhead, bringing regional personality into the celestial environment.

Occasional shooting stars move across the sky as guests travel through the geodesic enclosure and toward the top of the tower.

Night Descent

The nighttime return trip gives visitors one final celebratory moment before they leave.

As the elevator descends through the night sky, fireworks burst overhead, creating a colorful finale to the Reunion Tower experience. The sequence then returns guests through the tower structure and into the elevator shaft below.

Execution

Each video was designed specifically for the ceiling-mounted display inside the elevator cab. The upward and downward perspectives reinforce the physical direction of travel, while carefully staged architectural layers, atmospheric effects, recognizable landmarks, and environmental sound create a convincing sense of height and movement.

Separate daytime and nighttime versions allow the experience to reflect the time of the visit while maintaining a consistent visual narrative across all four journeys.
